The Gung family is composed of four siblings named after precious stones: the eldest, Bi Chwi (Jade), San Ho (Coral), Ryu Bi (Ruby) and the youngest, Ho Bak (Amber). We follow them as they evolve, interact, grow, fight, fall in love. They are surrounded by their parents and grandparents that don’t get along really well. In one word: Family.
The cast is great except for Michael Blunk (Kyle) that I suspect was only chosen for his Korean level because his acting is very weak… My favorite characters here are Ruby, her parents, the two grandmas and Kkeut Sun. Choi Ah Jin delivers a pretty good performance. Nice job with the cute toddler, I guess the scenes with him were not easy to handle. There are a lot of funny scenes, the fights between kids and between parents. I mean, if you have a family, you can relate to it easily. That is a universal story. If you would want only one reason to watch this drama, the moment when the halmonis dance to Abracadabra is a pearl. I laughed so much. Just epic! 😀 I love Kim Yeong Ok she’s just awesome! hehe Thumbs up to Hong Yu Jin, great performance as the demential mother.
**SPOILER**SPOILER**SPOILER** The thing I like about this drama is that they talk a lot about Korean traditions. If you would want a second reason, that would be this. They give a lot of references that any Korean would relate to and as a foreigner it can be a good start to discover Korean culture and traditions. Now for the worst part, two things bother me: First, I don’t think the story is well balanced between the beginning and the end of the drama. The ending rushes a lot. I like that they show what several characters have become but it would have been better and more efficient to shorten some parts earlier in the story and develop the conclusion. Second, I’m REALLY unhappy with Ruby’s story ending. What woman would accept to marry a guy whose mother hates her and who has been ditched twice by this very same guy only to walk another girl to the altar??? Completely UNBELIEVABLE. I guess we have another victim of the ratings here… Anyways, overall I enjoyed this drama.
