아들

차… 승… 원… Cha… Seung… Weon…

Of course, after viewing several works with him (Greatest Love, City Hall, Athena, Blades Of Blood,…), I had a lot of expectations… This guy is a cool cat, a great actor and he’s quite funny too. I really wanted to see this movie, 아들, but I knew from the synopsis and reviews that it was different. Anyways, I love stories. Maybe that is the little girl inside me talking. I believe in stories. And I believe in its characters. Cha Seung Weon is not only handsome but a great actor and would make anyone believe in any story… His face is very expressive… Generally, that is what I like in actors. I always give extra points to those ones and I would generally prefer a less good-looking actor/actress that conveys emotions better because in the end, movies are about telling story and how can I believe in their story if I can’t believe in them actors?..

So one day, I decided to watch this. When I pressed play, I was concerned I would get bored but on the contrary, I was intrigued, wondering what was going on. Various characters give hints like the grandmother but you actually don’t see them until the end and only then you rewind and think “oh that was it!!!” After 20-30 minutes, I did feel something was fishy but I couldn’t put my finger on it until it was revealed to me… This story was so touching but apparently wasn’t a great hit in Korea. People are missing out, here!!! The cast is very good, the story is simple but right to the point. No unnecessary dialogs, the silences are strong, vibrant…  What is it to be a father? What is it to be a son? The writer takes you by the hand and places you exactly where he wants you to be so obviously, as any good story that would swallow me, I cried because it was inevitable…
All 3 main actors, Cha Seung Weon, Ryu Deok Hwan and Kim Ji Yeong deliver a very good performance. This movie is soooo moving I gave them a lot of points. One day in a life time to reconnect and explain, to forgive and be forgiven, to express the suppressed, and live.  Highly recommended.
