Ku San Daek is Gumiho, the 9-tail fox woman. As she is willing to become human and live peacefully, she gets married and has a child, Yeon Yi. Everything is perfect until a few months before her daughter’s 10th birthday, San Daek’s husband reveals that he saw Gumiho, breaking his vow only 1 day before the 10-year limit that would have allowed her to remain human forever. In another village, nobleman Yun Du Su and his wife don’t know what to do to save their daughter Cho Ok from death. As she falls sick over and over again, despite all their attention and care, they decide to meet a strange shaman. Yun Du Su meets him alone in his cave and he is told to find a little girl born on the same day and time as his own daughter and feed her with the liver of that girl on their 10th birthday or his daughter will die.
This drama is very interesting. It is a whole bunch of mythology, folk tales, shamanism, superstitions, insanity and trickery. Either you will find it ridiculous or you will fall for it. Personally, I loved it! hehe. There is a lot of tension right from the beginning. The shaman is definitely on the dark side. What is he exactly? I couldn’t figure it out. The cast is really good especially the 2 little girls. Seo Shin Ae is really good. This kid can act. I feel like Kim Yu Jeong is in all the dramas I watch but she’s really good. The little chubby kid, Chung Yi, is so funny. Han Eun Jeong & Kim Jeong Nan are excellent. Beautiful duet. I love the final face up between the master and his wife. The scene, very long with a dramatic dialogue (over 6 minutes), is very like a theatrical act. That is the essence of acting to me.
Now, the bad point in this drama, and I see only a major one: the special effects (cable work) & make up for the fox characters. Although the eyes are rather well done on the mother, I’m not convinced at all by the fox masks for the mother or the daughter. The kid looks more like a cat. The eyes on the kid are not convincing either. They just painted them in red. Also, the mother’s hands when she’s caught underwater are not good. They should have created better prosthesis. But overall, this drama is really good. The sets, costumes, and the strong story line compensates all that. Good production. Several times they edited this drama like a horror movie. That is interesting. I had never seen that for an historical drama.
I find there is also a message of tolerance. Try to accept the difference. Different doesn’t mean bad. Besides, who is the real beast? Gumiho and her child? Yun Du Su? His wife? Their daughter? The shaman? I think greed can lead to be worse than a beast…
To me, this was so good, I watched it in 4 days!!! I give overall 4 stars and half. Without the special effect issues, I would have given 5 stars.
