This drama, through the life of Hwang Jeong, covers the early years of western medecine in Joseon and the foundation of the first Western Medical School and Hospital in 1885, under the reign of King Go Jong up until the early years of Japan’s annexation in the 1910s. The remains of Jejungweon can be visited at Yonsei University. This a good historical drama. Although I had a hard time with the first couple episodes, as it often happens, I then got into the story. The story line is strong and flows naturally. Good production. The cast is great. The love story between Yu Seok Ran and Hwang Jeong is a little too platonic. Correct me if I’m wrong but they kiss only once in 36 episodes!!! Yeon Jeong Hun has a very strong presence. He’s very charismatic. There are a few appearances like Yi Jin (The Great Seer) or Son Hyeon Ju. Besides, I’ve never seen that many foreigners in the same drama, all of them speaking Korean. I think I counted 6 or 7 of them! Well, some are half Korean… The drama intensifies as it depicts the atmosphere of what was life like for Koreans in these times of turmoil. Some funny scenes come to release the tension. I especially enjoyed the wedding ‘ritual’ in episode 35. I also would like to give a big thumbs up for the costume designer. They had to cover a transition period which means the fashion changes a lot. Not only they had to prepare the hanbok but also the western costumes and the military uniforms. It’s a lot of work. Overall, I enjoyed this. Good work!
