Pak Bok Nyeo, the perfect housemaid, is hired to take care of a family whose falling apart. Indeed, a few days earlier, the household’s mother drawn herself in the river upon discovering her husband’s affair. The kids, despite Bok Nyeo’s peculiar behaviour – she never smiles – get attached to her and want to unveil the mystery of her past.
The drama is a remake of Japanese hit drama 家政婦のミタ (Kaseifu no Mita). It starts with a lot of comedy tainted with mystery and slowly drifts to a more dramatic atmosphere as Bok Nyeo’s past is slowly unveiled. Great performance by Choi Ji Wu who had to keep a stoical face ninety percent of the time. Due to Bok Nyeo’s character specificity, there’s a lot of black humor in the first episodes that makes the show very different from others. Bang Eun Hee is very funny. Kim Hae Suk too. It actually took me a while to recognize her. Note the funny names of the kids, Han Gyeol, Du Gyeol, Se Gyeol, which can be translated as Gyeol #1, Gyeol #2 and Gyeol #3. Gyeol can mean ‘texture’ or ‘grain’ if I’m correct. It would have been complete if the last child’s name would have been ‘Ne Gyeol’ but I guess it doesn’t work! hehe Kang Ji Wu who plays Hye Gyeol’s character is really cute and delivers a very good performance for her age. She is talented and had a great deal of scenes either with the other kids or with big Ji Wu. I wonder if it is not too much though as dark circles started to show around episodes 17-18. Maybe it’s a little too much of workload for such a young kid. Story wise, the ending is satisfying. Writers used some easy tricks here and there along the way but the overall rendering is still enjoyable.
Side story: Dispute over title.
