Lady Jeong makes an doubtful bet with her cousin that if he can take away Lady’s Jo virtue she will give herslef to him.
This is an adaptation of the novel ‘Les liaisons dangereuses’ by Choderlos de Laclos. I guess it’s because I’ve seen several adaptations already and that I actually read the original book as part of my studies in high school that I was not that much impressed. I’ve read the book first and I loved it, finished it in a few days. The book, very captivating, is actually a succession of letters, fruit of the correspondence between the protagonists. This movie version is lighter that what I’ve read. The book goes a lot more into the perversion and dark side of the different characters, especially Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil here incarnated by Yi Mi Suk as Lady Jo. I’ve seen several adaptations of this tale, the last one being the 2012 Chinese version that is quite good too. My favorite version so far is the Glenn Close movie, Dangerous Liaisons (1988), but I must say the idea of translating the story into Joseon dynasty is not bad. It is quite interesting actually. The cast is good and as always the costumes sumptuous. I just wished they had gone deeper into Lady Jo’s character since everything revolves around her being the key factor in all others destinies. This movie is definitely worth a watch.
